Series tied 2-2
The New York Yankees were on the brink of elimination. They sure stepped up. Gleyber Torres homered, the pitching stepped up, and the Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays by a 5-1 score, keeping their season alive for at least one more day.

The Yankees got the scoring started in the second inning, when Luke Voit hit a solo homer to left field, making it 1-0 Yankees. Later in the inning, DJ Lemahieu hit a sac fly to make it 2-0 Yankees. In the 3rd, Willy Adames scored on a fielders choice, making it a 2-1 lead for the Yankees. It stayed that way until the 6th inning, when Torres hit a two run homer to left field, making it a 4-1 Yankees lead. In the 8th, Kyle Higashioka hit an RBI single to make it 5-1 Yankees.

Voit was asked how the Yankees performed under pressure, with Voit saying that "We're like caged animals." Manager Aaron Boone said that "There was certainly an edge to them right before the game, right before we were ready to take the field, and I thought everyone came up big tonight."

Chad Green got the win for the Yankees, throwing two innings of relief, both scoreless innings. Jordan Montgomery got the start for the Yankees, pitching 4 innings. Montgomery allowed one run on 3 hits and 3 walks, striking out 4 hitters. Zack Britton and Aroldis Chapman also pitched for the Yankees.

Ryan Thompson got the loss for the Rays, serving as an opener. Thompson allowed two runs on two hits and 3 walks, striking out 3 hitters. Ryan Yarbrough came in as a long reliever after Thompson was lifted, pitching 5 innings, allowing two runs on 6 hits and one walk. Aaron Slegers also pitched for the Rays.

The series continues on Friday, with the Yankees starting Gerrit Cole on three days' rest. The Rays start the winner of game 2, Tyler Glasnow, on just two days' rest.
