The Pittsburgh Pirates have declined Chris Archer's $11 million option for 2021, which makes Archer a free agent, according to Adam Berry of MLB.com. Archer's option was bought out for $250,000. Archer didn't play at all this season due to Thoracic outlet surgery that he underwent in June. The Pirates have confirmed, but have yet to comment on the move.

In his first and only full season with the Pirates, in 2019, Archer underperformed significantly. He went 3-9 with a 5.19 ERA in 23 starts, allowing 25 homers and 69 earned runs, striking out 143 hitters. In his 8 year career, Archer has a career 60-80 record, with a 3.86 ERA in 212 career appearances, with all but two of those being starts. Archer has spent his 8 year MLB career with the Pirates and Tampa Bay Rays, making the all star game in 2015 and 2017.

Archer was traded to the Pirates in July of 2018 following an 11 game win streak by the Pirates to put them back in the playoff race. The Pirates sent top players Austin Meadows and Tyler Glasnow to the Rays, along with pitcher Shane Baz. Archer has struggled for the strong majority of his time in Pittsburgh, while Meadows and Glasnow have evolved into all stars with the Rays, being key faces in their world series run, which ultimately fell short.
