Bauer declines Reds qualifying offer

Free agent RHP Trevor Bauer will be declining the qualifying offer from the Cincinnati Reds, according to Bauer's agent, Rachel Luba. Bauer, a current free agent, was extended the one year, $18.9 million qualifying offer by the Reds, which, if declined, would give the Reds a draft pick if Bauer signs elsewhere. Bauer has declined it, so if he signs with another team, the Reds would get a draft pick in the compensation round of the 2021 MLB Draft.

Bauer, before the 2020 season, expressed a desire to only sign one year deals in order to keep betting on himself and making sure he is the best pitcher he can be. Bauer has now walked back on that, recently expressing his thoughts on multi year deals, saying that he is open to and will consider all deals he is offered in free agency.

Bauer's agent said on a Twitter statement that "Why wait for the QO to expire to state the obvious (plus @BauerOutage believes the QO is a ridiculous process so let’s just put it to bed)—Trevor Bauer has rejected the QO but not the Reds, & he looks forward to speaking w/ them & all other interested teams thru Free Agency."

Bauer had his best season in his career in a Reds uniform in 2020, putting up dazzling numbers in the short season. Bauer posted a 5-4 record with a sparkling 1.73 ERA over 11 starts, striking out exactly 100 hitters in 73 innings pitched, while only walking 17. In his 9 year MLB career, Bauer has a 75-64 record with a 3.90 ERA across 205 appearances, 195 of those being starts. Bauer has spent his career with the Reds, as well as the Arizona Diamondbacks and Cleveland Indians.
