Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash and Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly both earned manager of the year for their respective leagues. Cash received 22 of the 30 first place votes, earning a total of 126 points. Mattingly received 20 first place votes and 8 second place votes to get the win in the NL.

In 2020, the Rays went 40-20 under Cash, winning the AL East convincingly and clinching the top seed in the AL playoff picture, making it all the way to the world series before losing in 6 games to the Dodgers. Cash won pretty convincingly, with the second place finisher, Rick Renteria, getting 61 points, well behind Cash's 126. Charlie Montoyo of the Blue Jays came in 3rd with 47 points, followed by Oakland's Bob Melvin, Rocco Baldelli of the Twins, and Dusty Baker of the Astros.

Mattingly was an obvious choice for the NL honors. The Marlins suffered almost 25 positive COVID-19 cases at the start of the season, being shut down from playing for over two weeks, and people wondered if they could finish the season. Then, they came together and started winning. They won a lot. They made the playoffs as the 7th seed in the NL picture, and advanced past the Chicago Cubs in the wild card round, making it to the NLDS before they were swept away by the Braves.

Mattingly, like Cash, won by a landslide, as the second place finisher, Jayce Tingler of the Padres, finished with 71 points, well behind Mattingly's 124. David Ross of the Cubs took 3rd place with 25 points, followed by Atlanta's Brian Snitker, Dave Roberts of the Dodgers, Mike Shildt in St.Louis, Craig Counsell in Milwaukee, and others.
