The Toronto Blue Jays have signed LHP Robbie Ray to a one year, $8 million deal, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. Ray's contract also has bonuses attached to it. The Blue Jays have confirmed the deal. The Blue Jays are reportedly expected to be aggressive this winter, and bringing back Ray could signal the start of it.

Ray is coming off an uneven 2020 season. He went 2-5 with a ballooned 6.62 ERA in 12 appearances, 11 of which were starts. Ray also allowed 13 homers, and struck out 68 batters, walking 45. In his career, Ray is a 49-51 record with a 4.26 ERA in 161 appearances, with 157 of those being starts. Ray has been in the majors 7 years, split between the Detroit Tigers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and the Blue Jays. Toronto traded for Ray at the trade deadline this season.

Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said of the team's expected aggressive approach this winter that "I think we are in a position where we could add to this team with talent that is condensed in one player and a super high impact, we got to the point last year where we felt like the team was competitive enough to move towards winning, and that was a big part of that decision to sign Ryu."

With Ray being brought back, the Blue Jays rotation has Ray, Hyun-Jin Ryu, and Nate Pearson locked in as starters. Tanner Roark and Ross Stripling are in the mix for the back of the rotation, and young arms such as Trent Thornton, Anthony Kay, Thomas Hatch, and Julian Merryweather.
