As he works his way back from Tommy John surgery, a target date to return is clear. Pittsburgh Pirates RHP Jameson Taillon is expected to return by opening day of the 2021 season from his recovery from Tommy John Surgery, according to Pirates GM Ben Cherington.

Taillon last pitched on May 1, 2019. He was originally shut down due to a right elbow flexor strain, but in August of 2019, it was determined that Tommy John surgery would be the best course of action for Taillon to get back on the field. The surgery is the second time Taillon has undergone Tommy John surgery in his career.

Cherington said on an MLB Network radio appearance that "There's no reason he won't be ready for Opening Day, he was probably champing at the bit to pitch at the end of this year. We didn't do that ... but he was facing hitters at the end of the year, you know, throwing live BPs. He's made some actual changes in his arm patterning and his delivery, he really studied, the way his own body and arm are moving to try and figure out where am I putting stress on joints that maybe I shouldn't be."

Taillon, a second round pick in the 2010 MLB Draft, has a career record of 29-24 in 82 starts for the Pirates spread across 4 seasons, pitching to a 3.67 ERA with 466 innings pitched in the process. Taillon is set to rejoin a Pirates rotation looking for multiple starters, as Chris Archer is a free agent and Trevor Williams was DFA'd. Candidates for the rotation include Taillon, Joe Musgrove, Mitch Keller, Steven Brault, and JT Brubaker.
