Angels bring in veteran Claudio

The Los Angeles Angels have continued the makeover of their bullpen, signing reliever Alex Claudio to a one year, $1.125 million deal, according to an announcement by the team. Claudio is a left handed reliever who does his best work against lefty hitters, something the Angels could use in that bullpen along with Mike Mayers, who also pitched lefties well last season.

Claudio spent 2019 and 2020 with the Milwaukee Brewers. In 2020, Claudio posted a 0-0 record with a 4.26 ERA and 19 innings pitched in 20 appearances out of the Brewers bullpen, striking out 15 hitters. In Claudio's 7 year major league career, he has a 15-8 record with a 3.44 ERA in 311 total appearances, making just two starts. Claudio has thrown 311 2/3 innings in that time period. He has spent his career with the Texas Rangers, Brewers, and now the Angels.

New Angels GM Perry Minasian talked about the signing of Claudio, saying that "Having a quality lefty is important, especially in our ballpark with a shorter right field, he's a guy who has a few things: durability, versatility in his role, can pitch multiple innings and defends himself against right-handed hitters."

Minasian also discussed the Angels pursuit of a catcher, saying that "I think at catcher, similar to the way people talk about pitching depth, you can always use more, we're looking at every single part of this club, and if it makes sense and it's the right guy, that's something we'll look to improve."

Claudio is the 3rd reliever Minasian has brought in this offseason, joining Rule 5 draft pick Jose Alberto Rivera and former Reds closer Raisel Iglesias, who they traded for a week and a half ago. Minasian will likely bring in more relievers as well, as the Angels have released Hansel Robles, Keynan Middleton, Matt Andriese, Justin Anderson, and Hoby Milner, traded Noe Ramirez, and lost Jacob Barnes via a waiver claim.
