The New York Mets have signed right handed relief pitcher Trevor May, according to SNY's Andy Martino. The deal is for two years, according to Martino. May will earn $15.5 million total, equaling $7.75 million per season. There is also an additional $250,000 in bonuses that May can earn. The Mets have confirmed the deal.

May, who previously played for the Minnesota Twins, became one of their best relievers after missing the 2017 season due to Tommy John surgery. In the 2020 season, May posted a 1-0 record with a 3.86 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 24 relief appearances out of the Twins bullpen. In his 6 year major league career, May has a 23-21 record with a 4.44 ERA with 316 innings pitched across 215 appearances, 26 of them being starts. May has spent his entire career with the Twins.

Mets GM Sandy Alderson last week said that "We have a number of holes to fill, we talked about starting pitching, outfield, catching; we’d like to enhance the bullpen somewhat. We have a lot of places where we might invest, and it gives us some flexibility." The addition of May certainly is the start of that goal, as May is a top tier reliever in baseball since his recovery from Tommy John Surgery.

May's signing is the first major move by new Mets owner Steve Cohen since buying the team. In the Mets bullpen, May will slot into the back end of the bullpen alongside current closer Edwin Diaz, as well as Brad Brach, Dellin Betances, Jeurys Familia, and Miguel Castro.
