The Boston Red Sox have signed OF Hunter Renfroe to a one year, $3.1 million deal, according to an announcement from the team. Renfroe can also earn an additional $600K in bonuses in the deal, according to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. The Red Sox have confirmed the deal in the announcement.

Renfroe struggled in the 2020 season, hitting just .156 with 8 homers and 22 RBI in 42 games played for the Tampa Bay Rays, which led to Renfroe being non tendered at the end of November. In his 5 year major league career, spent with the Rays and San Diego Padres, Renfroe is a .228 hitter with 97 homers and 226 RBI in his 5 seasons.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said after the signing was announced that "He’s a very well-rounded player, the power is obvious and that’s been kind of his main calling card throughout his career. But he’s more than a one-trick pony. He’s an athlete. He’s a really good defensive outfielder so he should be able to contribute on both sides of the ball. His offensive game is really made for Fenway Park."

Bloom also discussed the big power Renfroe has, saying that "Obviously, talent is talent, but he should be able to mishit balls over the Green Monster. We saw it this summer. He was playing in a different uniform, but he came in here and peppered the Mass Pike and also hit balls into the bullpen. He’s got true power to be able to hit balls the other way out of here as a right-hander, and certainly more than enough power to hit and mishit balls over the left-field wall."

Renfroe himself said of joining the Red Sox that "Obviously the Green Monster is real. That field is unprecedented, short, 310 to left field and a giant wall out there, obviously just the memories in history that people have at that field is just incredible, and just to be part of it, that is just like a little kid’s dream. I really look forward to being out there. I had a great series there this year and hope to build off that."

Renfroe helps to shore up the Red Sox outfield, as the Red Sox had only two starting outfielders on the 40 man roster, in Andrew Benintendi and Alex Verdugo, before the signing of Renfroe, as Jackie Bradley Jr hit free agency. Renfroe was selected by the Red Sox back in the 31st round of the 2010 draft, but Renfroe decided to go to Mississippi State instead.
