The Boston Red Sox have signed RHP Matt Andriese to a one year, $2.1 million deal, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive. Andriese's contract guarantees him $2.1 million, with a team option for the 2022 season worth $3.5 million, with a $250,000 buyout. There are also incentives in the contract, which can max the deal out at $7.35 million over the two years, based on innings pitched. The Red Sox have confirmed the deal.

Andriese spent the short 2020 season with the Los Angeles Angels, posting a 2-4 record with a 4.50 ERA, striking out 33 hitters in 32 innings pitched, appearing in 16 games for the Angels, one of which was a start. Across Andriese's 6 major league seasons, he has a 26-34 record with an ERA of 4.57, throwing 460 2/3 innings in 183 total appearances, 50 of them being starts. Andriese also spent time with the Tampa Bay Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks prior to joining the Angels in 2020.

Andriese said in a zoom interview of his signing with the Red Sox that "I signed here with the Red Sox for the opportunity to do both, I have a lot of flexibility in my career. I’ve started lots of games and I’ve come in from the bullpen more recently. Going to be given the opportunity to start. And the Red Sox obviously are going to be trying to get more starters, too. But I think my flexibility and my role, I’m going to compete for a starting spot but I know being in the bullpen is also an option to help the team as well."

Andriese's experience in both starting and coming out of the bullpen will be crucial for the Red Sox, who have plenty of holes on the pitching side of things. They have a couple spots in the starting rotation to fill, with Chris Sale not coming back until midseason, Martin Perez's option being declined, and Eduardo Rodriguez's status in doubt. In the bullpen, the Red Sox have let go of several relievers who struggled last season, so they need some help to plug those leaks as well.
