Twins ink veteran reliever Robles

Veteran RHP Hansel Robles has signed a one year, $2 million deal with the Minnesota Twins, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman. Robles can earn an additional $500,000 in bonuses that trigger based on games finished. Robles is the first notable signing by the Twins this offseason. The Twins have confirmed the deal.

Robles had a rocky year with the Angels in 2020, losing his closer's job in the middle of the season. Robles posted a 0-2 record with a 10.26 ERA, striking out 20 hitters in 16 2/3 innings across 18 appearances with the Angels, posting just one save. In his 6 major league seasons, Robles has a 24-18 record with a 3.91 ERA, throwing 333 2/3 innings in 313 appearances, making one start. Robles also has 27 career saves to his name. Robles has spent his career with the New York Mets, as well as the Angels.

While Robles did have a rocky 2020, the Twins are hoping they can help him re-discover his dominant form in 2019 with the Angels, where he went 5-1 with a 2.48 ERA and 23 saves in their bullpen, being one of their best relievers. Even in 2018, after being traded to the Angels, Robles posted a 2.97 ERA with them as well, picking up two saves down the stretch.

The Twins have lost a lot of talent in the bullpen this winter, with Matt Wisler, Trevor May, Sergio Romo, and Tyler Clippard all leaving in free agency, with Wisler and May signing deals with new teams. Robles likely won't be the only reliever the Twins will sign, but if they can get his old form back, he'll be an important reliever for the Twins over the course of the next season, as Tyler Duffey and Taylor Rogers are currently the only high end options in the bullpen.
