The Philadelphia Phillies had looked like they were about to lose JT Realmuto and Didi Gregorius in the same offseason. That was before this week. After signing Realmuto, the Phillies and Gregorius have agreed on a two year, $28 million deal, according to Jayson Stark of The Athletic. The signing of Gregorius and Realmuto helps to preserve the 5th best hitting attack in MLB. The deal has been confirmed by the Phillies.

Gregorius spent 2020 with the Phillies, putting up a .284 average with a .827 OPS, slugging 10 homers and driving in 40 runs, playing all 60 games of the season for the Phillies. In his 9 year major league career, Gregorius is a .265 hitter with a .748 OPS, hitting 120 homers and 457 RBI in 911 games played, spending time with the Cincinnati Reds, Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Yankees, and the Phillies.

The Phillies had pursued other shortstops before attempting to re-sign Gregorius, showing interest in Andrelton Simmons, Marcus Semien, and Freddy Galvis. After all 3 players signed elsewhere, they did what they had to do to re-sign Gregorius, who makes the infield depth chart look better alongside Scott Kingery and Jean Segura.

The Phillies and president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski may not be done making moves this winter, as Dombrowski is reportedly eyeing upgrades to the pitching staff, including both the starting rotation and the bullpen.
