The Miami Marlins have signed RHP Ross Detwiler to a one year contract, according to MLB.com's Craig Mish. The deal is worth $850,000 for the 2021 season. Detwiler has been historically a lefty specialist, which fills a need in the Marlins bullpen as they take the next step towards contention. The Marlins have confirmed the deal.

Detwiler spent 2020 in the Chicago White Sox bullpen, posting a 1-1 record with a 3.20 ERA, striking out 15 hitters in 19 2/3 innings across 16 relief appearances. In Detwiler's 12 major league seasons, he has a 27-48 record with a 4.56 ERA, throwing 673 1/3 innings in 224 appearances, 95 of which were starts. Detwiler's lefty specialist mentailty worked against him in 2020 with the 3 batter minimum in effect for the season, but still posted quality numbers out of the White Sox bullpen.

Detwiler has 12 major league seasons under his belt, debuting in 2007 with the Washington Nationals. Detwiler has spent his career with the Nationals, Texas Rangers, Cleveland Indians, Seattle Mariners, Oakland Athletics, Atlanta Braves, White Sox, and now the Marlins. After mostly mixed success in the starting rotation previously, the White Sox tried Detwiler as a starter in 2019. It did not go well. In 12 starts, Detwiler posted a high 6.59 ERA, and was transitioned to the bullpen at the end of the season.

Detwiler joins a Marlins bullpen in need of some veteran experience as they look to start contending for the playoffs rather soon. Detwiler joins new addition Adam Cimber in the bullpen along with returners such as Stephen Tarpley, Nick Neidert, James Hoyt, and Richard Bleier.
