Padres reportedly talking about Tatis extension

After a crazy week that has them as favorites for champions of the offseason, the San Diego Padres might not be done just yet. The Padres are reportedly talking with Fernando Tatis Jr and his agent about a possible contract extension for the young superstar, according to GM AJ Preller. Preller mentioned he is hoping they can get a deal done by opening day of the 2021 season.

Preller said in an MLB Network Radio appearance that "He's obviously a tremendous player, one of the better young players in the game. He just wants to keep getting better and better and from our standpoint, we'll start to really dig in on that. Hopefully we're on common ground and able to work something out here at some point before the season."

Indeed, Tatis had a fantastic season in 2020, hitting .277 with 17 homers and 45 RBI, stealing 11 bases in 59 games played for the Padres. In 2019, his rookie season, Tatis hit .317 with 22 homers and 53 RBI, stealing 16 bases in 84 games. Tatis was acquired from the White Sox in June of 2016 in a trade that saw James Shields go to Chicago.

This offseason, there are so few teams willing to spend, but the Padres have been openly spending in the hopes that they can catch the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West and win a world series rather soon. The Padres this offseason have traded for Blake Snell, Yu Darvish, and Victor Caratini, and have signed free agent shortstop Ha-Seong Kim from the Korean Baseball Organization(KBO). Tatis is currently under contract through the 2024 season, but a possible extension would add more time for the Padres to compete.
