Red Sox bringing back Perez on one year deal

Well I guess the Red Sox decided to do something this offseason too. The Boston Red Sox have signed LHP Martin Perez to a one year, $4.5 million deal, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. There is also a team option for the 2022 season worth $6 million with a $500,000 buyout, which guarantees Perez $5 million total. The deal has been confirmed by the Red Sox.

Perez spent 2020 with the Red Sox, going 3-5 with a 4.50 ERA, striking out 46 hitters in 62 innings pitched across 12 starts with the Red Sox. In his 9 major league seasons, Perez has a 56-61 record with a 4.71 ERA, throwing 988 2/3 innings in 185 appearances, 169 of which were starts.

Perez was the only member of the Red Sox rotation to make all 12 of his scheduled starts in 2020, as they were rocked by injuries, question marks, and bad performances. Perez allowed two runs or fewer in 7 of his 12 starts, and his ERA is only as high as it is due to being shelled in his first and last starts of the season. For the most part, he was effective for the Red Sox, which they desperately needed in 2020, and what they didn't get enough of from the rest of the team.

Perez will almost certainly earn a rotation spot in spring training for the Red Sox. The rotation for Boston currently consists of Eduardo Rodriguez, Nathan Eovaldi, and Perez, with Nick Pivetta, Matt Andriese, and Tanner Houck expected to compete for rotation spots as well. The Red Sox are also reportedly in the market for more starting pitchers, with the team showing interest in RHP Jake Odorizzi, as well as Garrett Richards.
