A's bringing back reliever Petit

The Oakland Athletics showed up late to the spending spree in free agency, but you know what they say: Better late than never. The Athletics have signed RHP Yusmeiro Petit to a one year, $2.55 million deal, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. Petit has been a key piece in the A's bullpen the last few seasons, and he's back in the fold for one more year. The Athletics have confirmed the deal.

Petit had a sharp season out of the bullpen in 2020, posting a 2-1 record with a sharp 1.66 ERA, striking out 17 hitters in 21 2/3 innings pitched, across 26 relief appearances in 2020. In his 13 major league seasons, Petit has a 42-41 record with a 3.93 ERA, throwing 826 innings and saving 6 games in 437 appearances, 59 of which were starts.

Since joining Oakland in 2018, Petit has been used in a variety of roles by manager Bob Melvin. Most frequently, he has been used as a two or three inning swingman for the middle innings, and also has performed set-up man duties, bridging the gap to closer Liam Hendriks, who left this offseason in free agency. Since joining Oakland, Petit has led all major league relievers in appearances and innings pitched, with a 2.73 ERA in that time.

Petit brings stability and 13 years of big league experience to an Oakland bullpen that lost Hendriks to the White Sox in free agency this offseason. Jake Diekman is expected to get the first shot at closing games in the bullpen, while Petit will likely serve as a set-up man or a two inning reliever by Melvin. The Athletics have also recently traded for Adam Kolarek and signed Sergio Romo to aid the bullpen.
