Cobb heading to Angels in trade with Baltimore

The Los Angeles Angels bolstered their pitching depth, even if they didn't get one of the top options available. The Angels have acquired RHP Alex Cobb and cash considerations from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for 2B Jahmai Jones, according to Dan Connolly of The Athletic. The Angels will reportedly be responsible for $5 million of the $15 million salary owed to Cobb, with the Orioles paying for the rest. Both teams have confirmed the trade.

Cobb made 10 starts for the Orioles in the shortened 2020 season, posting a 2-5 record with a 4.30 ERA, striking out 30 hitters in 52 1/3 innings pitched in his 10 starts. In his 9 big league seasons, Cobb has a 55-57 record with a 3.88 ERA, throwing 917 innings in 156 starts in the majors. Cobb has spent his entire career in the AL East, playing for the Orioles for 3 seasons, and the Tampa Bay Rays for 6 prior to signing with Baltimore.

Angels GM Perry Minasian said of acquiring Cobb that “Just doing the homework on Alex and learning about the guy, he has outstanding makeup and is a huge presence in the clubhouse. Great competitor. Obviously Joe(Maddon) had him in the past in Tampa and was a huge fan. We feel like there’s significant upside here, and he pitched well in the AL East, which was one of the tougher divisions to pitch in with the lineups he faced and the ballparks he pitched in.”

The Angels are hoping that their latest offseason trade with the Orioles pans out as well as their last one, when they traded for Dylan Bundy last season. Bundy became one of the Angels best pitchers in a breakout season, and the Angels are hoping that they can do the same with Cobb.

After signing Cobb and veteran lefty Jose Quintana earlier this winter, the Angels have a 6 man rotation of Cobb, Quintana, Bundy, Andrew Heaney, Griffin Canning, and likely Shohei Ohtani, with Jaime Barria in the mix for innings as well.
