Giants adding McGee to bullpen mix

The San Francisco Giants have made a habit of adding experienced relievers to the bullpen this offseason. The Giants have signed LHP Jake McGee to a two year, $7 million deal, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman. McGee bolsters up the left handed bullpen aspect in San Francisco. The Giants have confirmed the deal.

McGee spent 2020 in the Dodgers bullpen, posting a 3-1 record with a 2.66 ERA, striking out 33 hitters in 20 1/3 innings across 24 relief appearances, helping the Dodgers to their first world series title since 1988. In the postseason, he gave up one run in 2 2/3 innings across 4 appearances. In McGee's 11 seasons, he has a 28-23 record with a 3.59 ERA, throwing 475 2/3 innings across 546 relief appearances.

McGee could be in contention for the closer spot in the Giants bullpen, who mostly went closer by committee last season. McGee has 45 career saves to his name in his 11 major league seasons. Most of McGee's saves came with the Tampa Bay Rays, and he picked up 19 with the Colorado Rockies. McGee should be in line to replace Tony Watson in the Giants bullpen, who was the leader of the bullpen last season.

McGee improves the left handed pitching depth in the bullpen, joining lefties Jarlin Garcia, Sam Selman, Wandy Peralta, and Caleb Baragar, who are all on the 40 man roster in San Francisco. Previously, the Giants had signed John Brebbia and Matt Wisler, as well as selecting Dedniel Nunez in the rule 5 draft, to aid the right handed pitching depth.

The Giants have had a busy offseason, signing McGee, Brebbia, Wisler, along with Curt Casali, Tommy LaStella, Anthony Desclafani, and brought back Kevin Gausman on the one year qualifying offer.
