Mets bring in lefty Loup

The New York Mets have a bullpen full of right handed pitchers. They needed a lefty reliever. They just got one. The Mets have signed LHP Aaron Loup to a one year contract worth $3 million, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The only two other lefty relievers on the Mets roster have inconsistent histories, so Loup is a solid addition to the bullpen as the Mets try to bulk up the pitching depth. The Mets have confirmed the deal.

Loup spent the Pandemic shortened 2020 season in the Tampa Bay Rays bullpen, posting a 3-2 record with a 2.52 ERA, striking out 22 hitters in 25 innings pitched across 24 relief appearances in the Rays run to the world series, where they lost in 6 games. In Loup's 9 big league seasons, he has a 15-22 record with a 3.38 ERA, throwing 351 innings across 406 relief appearances.

In his 9 year career, Loup has been around a decent portion of the majors, suiting up for the Toronto Blue Jays for the first 6 1/2 seasons of his career, before he wound up with the Philadelphia Phillies to end 2018. After that, he went to the San Diego Padres for the 2019 season, before winding up back in the AL East in 2020 with the Rays.

The Mets have made several additions to the pitching depth this winter, with Loup, Trevor May, and Joey Lucchesi being the most notable additions, but also adding veteran Jerry Blevins, Stephen Tarpley, and prospect Thomas Szapucki.
