The Boston Red Sox are continuing to re-stock the roster depth with fresh faces. The Red Sox have signed IF/OF Marwin Gonzalez to a one year, $3 million contract, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. There are performance bonuses in the contract that can max the deal at one year and $4.1 million. The Red Sox have confirmed the deal.

Gonzalez spent the 2020 season in the Minnesota Twins lineup, with an average of .211 with a .606 OPS, hitting 5 homers and driving in 22 runs in 53 games played for the Twins. In his 9 year major league career, Gonzalez has an average of .261 with a .729 OPS, hitting 96 homers and driving in 369 runs in 962 games played.

Gonzalez brings lots of defensive versatility to Boston, as he has played every position except catcher in the majors. Yes, Gonzalez has pitched in mop up duty before. He will most likely spend the majority of his time in a platoon at first base with Bobby Dalbec, and a left field platoon with Franchy Cordero, and possibly Alex Verdugo. He could also see time at 3rd base or shortstop if Rafael Devers or Xander Bogaerts are out of the lineup.

Gonzalez isn't the only utility player the Red Sox have brought in this offseason, as they have also signed Enrique Hernandez, who has played all infield positions and will likely be Verdugo's backup in center field once the regular season gets going in April.

The Red Sox have had an under the radar offseason so far, signing Gonzalez, Hernandez, Garrett Richards, Martin Perez, and Matt Andriese. They have also traded for Cordero and relief pitcher Adam Ottavino.
