The Detroit Tigers had been linked to OF Nomar Mazara since the start of the offseason. Now, as spring training begins, they finally got it done. The Tigers and Mazara have agreed to a one year deal worth $1.75 million, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman. There are incentives in the contract. The Tigers have confirmed the contract.

Mazara struggled with the Chicago White Sox in 2020, posting just a .228 average with a .589 OPS, hitting just one homer and driving in 15 runs in 42 games played. In Mazara's 5 major league seasons, split between the White Sox and Texas Rangers, he has a .258 average with a .744 OPS, hitting 80 homers and driving in 323 runs in 579 games played.

Detroit has also previously had interest in Mazara, as they were in talks with the Rangers to get him, before he was ultimately traded to the White Sox for a mid level prospect. Unfortunately, Mazara's numbers fell considerably in 2020, although the Pandemic shortened regular season may contribute to some of it. Regardless, he was non tendered by the White Sox in December, and hit the free agent market.

Despite Mazara struggling throughout 2020, there were some positive signs for Mazara. His 48.9 percent hard hit rate ranked in the top 10 percent of major league hitters, according to Statcast. His average exit velocity of 91 mph was also a career best, and ranked in the top 18 percent of major league hitters. He'll have a chance to build on that in the Tigers outfield this season.

Mazara joins a crowded Tigers outfield that includes Robbie Grossman, Niko Goodrum, JaCoby Jones, Victor Reyes, Christin Stewart, Akil Baddoo, and Daz Cameron. Mazara also joins Grossman, Jonathan Schoop, Greg Garcia, Renato Nunez, and Wilson Ramos as new additions this offseason.
