Twins adding closer Colome

The Minnesota Twins have their big ticket acquisition. The Twins have signed RHP Alex Colome to a one year, $6.25 million deal, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman. Colome will earn $5 million in 2021, with a $5.5 million mutual option for the 2022 season, with a $1.25 million buyout, guaranteeing Colome $6.25 million. The Twins have confirmed the deal.

Colome had a fantastic season in the Chicago White Sox bullpen in 2020, posting a 2-0 record with a 0.81 ERA, striking out 16 hitters in 22 1/3 innings pitched across 21 relief appearances, picking up 12 saves. In Colome's career, he has a 28-23 record with a 2.95 ERA, throwing 424 innings in 326 appearances, 19 of which were starts. Colome has 138 saves, leading MLB with 47 in 2017 with the Rays.

Adding relief pitching has been a point of emphasis for the Twins this offseason, as they lost Matt Wisler, Tyler Clippard, Sergio Romo, and Trevor May to free agency. Colome will certainly help rebuild the bullpen, and the Twins also brought in Hansel Robles earlier in the offseason to try and plug some holes as well.

Colome has been consistently productive in his career, being a reliable arm for the high leverage innings for both the Rays and the White Sox. In his White Sox tenure, he had a 2.27 ERA with 42 saves in 83 appearances in his two seasons in Chicago. Colome got his start with the Rays, spending the first 5 1/2 seasons of his career, before he was traded to the Mariners at the 2018 trade deadline.

The Twins offseason had started slow, with Robles being the only signing before January. Since then, JA Happ, Nelson Cruz, Andrelton Simmons, and now Colome have been added to the fold.
