The Chicago White Sox and LHP Carlos Rodon have agreed to a one year, $3 million contract for the 2021 season, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. Rodon will likely compete for one of the final two spots in the starting rotation alongside Dylan Cease and Reynaldo Lopez. The White Sox have confirmed the deal.

Rodon made just 4 appearances in the short 2020 season, two of which were starts. He posted a 0-2 record with a rather high 8.22 ERA, striking out 6 hitters in 7 2/3 innings pitched for the White Sox in 2020. In Rodon's 6 major league seasons, he has a 29-33 record with a 4.14 ERA, throwing 536 2/3 innings across 97 appearances, 92 of which were starts.

Rodon was originally non tendered in early December by the White Sox after his disappointing season in 2020, but the White Sox are bringing him back, with the hopes that if he can't get a spot in the starting rotation, he can be a serviceable pitcher in the bullpen for manager Tony LaRussa to turn to.

Rodon was selected with the 3rd overall pick by the White Sox in the 2014 draft, and made his big league debut in the 2015 season. Since then, his career has been marred by injuries and disappointing performances, as 2015 is the only season to date that Rodon has posted an ERA under 4.00. His only opening day start came in 2019 against the Kansas City Royals.

The White Sox have had a busy offseason as they try to compete for a world series title, hiring LaRussa as manager, and bringing in Adam Eaton to help with their outfield situation, and trading for Lance Lynn to boost the starting rotation, and signing top reliever Liam Hendriks to be their closer.
