The New York Yankees will be without one of their top bullpen arms for a few months. LHP Zack Britton will undergo arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone chip in his left elbow in the coming days, according to an announcement by the Yankees. Britton is having the surgery at a New York hospital, performed by their team physician, Dr. Christopher Ahmad.

Britton experienced soreness in his arm on a recent bullpen session over the weekend, which led to him getting an MRI on his left arm on Monday. The results came back recently, which showed the bone chip, which led to the surgery being required. Britton will likely miss April and May while he recovers and ramps back up before rejoining the Yankees.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after the Yankees spring training game on Tuesday that there was no timeline, saying that "As far as timetables and stuff like that, we’ll have more in the coming day or two days." The typical recovery time for the surgery is 3 or 4 months, and Britton is shut down for 6 weeks by the Yankees.

After news of the surgery broke, Britton tweeted that "I appreciate the support from everyone. We all have daily challenges we have to overcome in order to reach our goals. Just have to keep pushing ahead! I will get this taken care of during the upcoming week and be back as soon as I can."

Britton was slated to be the primary setup man in the Yankees bullpen this season, opening the door for Aroldis Chapman to enter in the 9th to close games. With Britton out, the late inning workload will figure to increase for other high leverage relievers Darren O'Day, Chad Green, and Justin Wilson.
