The Pittsburgh Pirates have gone the veteran route to sign more pitching depth. The Pirates have signed RHP Trevor Cahill to a one year, $1.5 million deal, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. There is an additional $1 million available in bonuses as well. The Pirates have confirmed the signing.

Cahill spent the Pandemic shortened 2020 season in the San Francisco Giants rotation, posting a 1-2 record with a 3.24 ERA, striking out 31 hitters in 25 innings pitched across 11 appearances, 6 of which were starts. In his long 12 year career, spent with 8 different teams, Cahill has a 85-94 record with a 4.20 ERA, throwing 1,470 2/3 innings in 352 appearances, 225 of which were starts.

Cahill has been both a starter and a reliever throughout his career, which will help Pirates manager Derek Shelton as he tries to balance innings among the pitchers in Pittsburgh, as there are no clear favorites for rotation spots currently, outside of Steven Brault and Mitch Keller. Since 2016, Cahill has signed with 7 teams, including the Pirates, although he hasn't made the major leagues with all of them.

Cahill is the second veteran addition the Pirates have made since spring training began, with Tyler Anderson being the other addition. Cahill joins a group of pitchers including Brault, Keller, Anderson, JT Brubaker, David Bednar, Kyle Crick, Duane Underwood Jr, Cody Ponce, and more.
