The Minnesota Twins are locking down their pitching depth. The Twins have agreed to an extension with RHP Randy Dobnak, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. The extension is for 5 years and $9.25 million. There are 3 years of team options in the deal, and incentives that can max the financial value at $29.75 million. The Twins have confirmed the deal.

Dobnak spent the short 2020 season in the Twins rotation, posting a 6-4 record with a 4.05 ERA, striking out 27 hitters in 46 2/3 innings, across 10 starts for the Twins. In his two big league seasons, Dobnak has a record of 8-5, with a 3.12 ERA. Dobnak has thrown 75 innings in 19 appearances, with all but 4 being starts.

Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said of Dobnak that "Randy's made a lot happen in a very short period of time. And every way you look at it, he's set himself up to continue to have success at the major league level. It's incredible, and it's kind of beautiful at the same time. And I don't think it's going anywhere in any fashion. This guy has major league caliber stuff."

Dobnak has come a long way to get to this point. He originally went undrafted out of Alderson Broaddus University in West Virginia, which led him to join the United Shore professional baseball league, an independent ball league. In 2017, he signed a deal with the Twins, and reached the major leagues in August of 2019 after a few seasons in the minors, where he also drove for Uber and Lyft.

Baldelli said of Dobnak's versatility that "He does it all and he does it with a smile, and he's so low maintenance of a human being. He just wants the ball and he just wants to pitch, and he's willing and able to do pretty much anything to help us win games. We appreciate him very much."

Dobnak has made the Twins opening day roster with a sparkling 0.66 ERA, according to manager Rocco Baldelli, and will start the season in the bullpen. The Twins rotation currently consists of Kenta Maeda, Jose Berrios, Michael Pineda, Matt Shoemaker, and JA Happ, but if one or more in the rotation get injured, expect Dobnak to get the first shot at that rotation spot.
