Cain and Woodruff lead Brewers over Cubs

Everyone was wondering why Milwaukee Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff left after only 74 pitches. Turns out, he emptied the tank. It didn't end up hurting the Brewers though. Lorenzo Cain homered twice, including the game winner in extra innings, and the Brewers toppled the Chicago Cubs with a 4-2 win in 10 innings on Wednesday afternoon.

The game was a pitchers duel for most of the day, with the scoring not starting until the 8th inning. Cain started it by blasting a solo homer to left field to make it 1-0 Brewers. In the bottom of the 8th, the Cubs tied it back up at 1-1 on a Joc Pederson solo homer. In the 10th, Cain hit a 3 run homer to center field to make it 4-1 Brewers. In the bottom of the 10th, the Cubs got a run on an RBI single by Jason Heyward, but it wasn't enough.

Cain praised Woodruff after the game, saying that "You're always happy to pull out a win, especially with the way Big Woo pitched. The guy's unbelievable. I mean, lights-out. He's got some nasty stuff. So you definitely want to go up there and get a win not only for him but this team as well. So, great day by everybody."

Woodruff threw 7 innings for the Brewers, allowing zero runs on just one hit, allowing no walks and striking out 8 hitters. It was Josh Hader who got the win however, throwing a scoreless top of the 9th inning, striking out two hitters. JP Feyereisen and Brad Boxberger combined to shut the door in the 10th inning. Devin Williams also threw the 8th inning, allowing the homer to Pederson.

Woodruff said after the game that "I had to kind of empty the tank in a sense, and even though it wasn’t that many pitches, the ups and downs is what gets you a little bit. After getting out of that inning and basically just emptying the tank there in the seventh just to get through that, I was a little tired coming out. I think that was the right time. I think that was the right moment because I was losing myself in my delivery a little bit on some pitches there."

On the other side, Brandon Workman got the loss for the Cubs, working the 10th inning, allowing the 3 run homer to Cain. Kyle Hendricks got the no decision in his start, throwing 6 innings. Hendricks allowed no runs on 4 hits and one walk, striking out 6 hitters. Alec Mills, Andrew Chafin, and Craig Kimbrel also pitched for the Cubs.

Cubs manager David Ross said of the offensive approach that "We tried to jump on the fastball, didn't have a lot of success. He's a really good pitcher. But then, we continued to fight."

The Cubs start a series with the Pittsburgh Pirates today, while the Brewers start a weekend series against the St.Louis Cardinals today as well.
