Yan Gomes stepped up for the Washington Nationals when they needed him. Gomes hit a homer, ended Tim Locastro's perfect base stealing percentage, and the Nationals topped the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 6-2 win Saturday afternoon. Ryan Zimmerman also homered for the Nationals.

Gomes got the Nats on the board with a solo homer in the second. Kole Calhoun then homered to tie it for the D-Backs. In the 4th, Andrew Stevenson hit an RBI double, Gomes hit an RBI single, and then Gomes scored on a sac fly to make it 4-1 Nats. In the 6th, Eduardo Escobar hit a solo homer to make it 4-2. In the 7th, Starlin Castro hit an RBI single, and Zimmerman hit a solo homer in the 8th to make it 6-2 Washington.

Gomes said of his big day at the plate that "The approach is always the same: Try to have good at-bats. Overall, it was just a little bit of work that we put in from the first game. I seemed to be kind of getting balls a little bit out in front, rolling them over. I was just trying to stay more inside of it and letting it get a little bit deeper.

Erick Fedde got the win for the Nationals, allowing one run on 5 hits and one walk, striking out 9 hitters in 5 innings pitched for the Nationals. After Fedde departed, Wander Suero, Sam Clay, Kyle Finnegan, Tanner Rainey, and Kyle McGowin also pitched for the Nats, with Clay being responsible for the other run.

Gomes said of Fedde's performance that "You can tell he’s not trying to nibble, not wasting pitches, so that was really fun to see. You see his confidence start to go up, and you just keep calling whatever you want in there and he’s going to make good pitches."

On the other side, Luke Weaver got the loss for Arizona, allowing 4 runs on 9 hits and no walks, striking out 3 hitters in 4 innings pitched in the defeat. Anthony Swarzak and Taylor Clarke were responsible for the other two runs, with Caleb Smith being the only D-Backs pitcher to have a scoreless day, working two shutout innings.

Locastro said of being thrown out stealing for the first time that "I got the jump I wanted. Gomes had a good pitch to throw on and a nice tag by Castro. It is what it is. It was a good run. Hopefully now I go for 30 the next run I have here. So that's the goal."

The D-Backs and Nats face off on Sunday afternoon to finish up the series, with Madison Bumgarner starting for Arizona, and Stephen Strasburg going for Washington.
