Albert Almora Jr's game saving catch in center field for the New York Mets ironically came against his old teammate and good friend Kyle Schwarber. Still, it was an important catch to preserve the win. JD Davis homered, Pete Alonso homered as well, and the Mets defeated the Washington Nationals with a 4-0 win Sunday afternoon.

Davis got the Mets on the board quickly, mashing a two run homer in the first inning to give the Mets a 2-0 lead early on. In the 4th inning, James McCann was able to increase the lead to 3-0 when Davis came around to score on McCann's single. In the 5th, the score became 4-0 on a solo homer by Alonso, wrapping up the scoring for this game.

Almora said of making his big catch against Schwarber that "Schwarber’s one of my best friends, but at the end of the day, the game of baseball comes first. He's going to have plenty more opportunities to hit homers and hit doubles. I’m sure he understands."

Taijuan Walker got his first win in a Mets uniform, moving to 1-1 this season in a handful of starts. Walker allowed zero runs on 3 hits and 3 walks, recording 4 strikeouts in 7 strong innings for the Mets. Miguel Castro came in for the 8th after Walker departed, throwing a scoreless inning on two hits. Edwin Diaz then came in for the 9th, and shut down the Nats with a clean inning.

Walker said of his first win in a Mets uniform that "Give it up to the defense, man, They really helped me out today. I didn’t have my best stuff. They came through for me. The offense putting up runs early was helpful, too. Let me attack and just go after hitters."

Patrick Corbin got the start for the Nationals and was hit with the loss, dropping to 0-2 in a tough start to the season. Corbin allowed 4 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks in 4 innings pitched, being taken out in the 5th inning after giving up the solo homer to Alonso. Austin Voth then came on for the Nats and threw 3 scoreless innings with 4 strikeouts. Tanner Rainey finished it off with a scoreless 8th inning.

Schwarber said postgame of being robbed by Almora that "I just couldn’t help and laugh there. When I hit It, I thought it might have a chance. But as he kept running, I was like ‘Oh man, it might have to get over his head.’ He made a really good catch there."

The Nationals have a day off Monday before starting a series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday, with Max Scherzer expected to start for the Nationals. The Mets start a series with the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, with David Peterson starting for the Mets.
