Mets sign Lindor to massive extension

Right before the opening day deadline, the New York Mets extended their prize of the offseason. Late last night, ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that the Mets and Lindor have agreed to a 10 year, $341 million extension. There are no opt outs in the deal, which takes effect next season. Lindor gets $1 million more then Fernando Tatis Jr in San Diego, making his deal the 3rd largest in baseball, behind Mookie Betts and Mike Trout. The Mets have confirmed the deal.

Lindor played in all 60 games of the short 2020 season with the Cleveland Indians, posting a .258 average with a .750 OPS, hitting 8 homers and driving in 27 runs in his final season with the Indians. In his 6 seasons before 2021, Lindor has a .285 average with a .833 OPS, hitting 138 homers and driving in 411 runs in 777 games, to go along with his astounding defense at shortstop.

As the opening day deadline for an extension, set by Lindor, was getting closer, there was no indication the two sides were close to a deal, with the Mets having offered 10 years and $325 million, and Lindor's camp having offered 12 years and $385 million. Late Wednesday night, it was reported they were getting closer to an extension, and then, right after that, it got done.

The Lindor negotiations have been publicly known every step of the way, thanks to Cohen's use of Twitter. The Mets had said from the beginning that they wanted to keep Lindor around, and after about a month of negotiating with Lindor's agents, they were finally able to get a deal done, showing that they are no longer the same old Mets.

This is the only time in franchise history that the Mets have handed out a contract over $200 million, and they have new owner Steve Cohen to thank. Lindor's extension caps off a massive spending spree by the Mets, which saw James McCann, Trevor May, Taijuan Walker, Aaron Loup, Jonathan Villar, Kevin Pillar, Joey Lucchesi, Carlos Carrasco, and Lindor all come aboard this offseason.
