The Tampa Bay Rays have had the New York Yankees number lately. They were looking to sweep the Yankees Sunday afternoon to continue their dominance, and, well, they did. Joey Wendle homered, Yoshi Tsutsugo hit the go ahead RBI double, and the Rays swept the Yankees at Yankee stadium with a 4-2 win Sunday afternoon.

In the second inning, Giancarlo Stanton got the Yankees on the board with a solo homer to make it 1-0 Yankees. In the 3rd, Mike Zunino scored on a fielding error and Kevin Kiermaier scored on a sac fly to give the Rays a 2-1 lead. In the 5th, DJ Lemahieu tied it back up with an RBI single. In the 7th, Tsutsugo hit an RBI double, and Wendle homered in the 9th to make it 4-2 Rays.

Rays manager Kevin Cash said of sweeping the Yankees at Yankee stadium that "This venue can motivate you really quick, and whatever you’re going through before you get here, you better wipe it out, find a way to wipe it out. Because you’ve got to be at the top of your game to compete here."

Ryan Yarbrough got the win for the Rays, throwing 5 innings in relief of opener Andrew Kittredge. Both Kittredge and Yarbrough each allowed a run, with Kittredge giving up one hit and striking out 3, and Yarbrough giving up two and fanning 4 hitters. Diego Castillo then came on for 1 1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts, and Jeffrey Springs worked a scoreless 9th for his first save of the season.

Cash continued on about Yankee stadium, saying that "It is gratifying to come in here and for the guys to find a way to complete a series and win three. It's just not an easy thing to do, it doesn’t happen often, so you’ve got to enjoy it when it does."

Gerrit Cole started the game for the Yankees, and got the loss, throwing 6 1/3 innings. Cole allowed 3 runs on 5 hits and no walks, striking out 10 Rays in the process. Chad Green then threw two scoreless innings after Cole departed, and Darren O'Day worked 2/3 of an inning, allowing the homer to Wendle in the 9th.

Lemahieu said of the Yankees slow start this season that "We’re frustrated. They have good pitching, but I feel like we have a better lineup than we showed this series, and we’ve showed this year so far. No one's going to feel sorry for us; no one's going to throw softer or throw easier for us. We’ve got to find it within ourselves to continue to get better and play the way we're capable of."

The Rays face the Kansas City Royals tonight to start their series, with Josh Fleming getting the start. The Yankees face the Braves on Tuesday with Jameson Taillon starting.
