The Philadelphia Phillies offense had been quiet all night long, until the 7th inning hit. That inning won them the game, Rhys Hoskins hit a 3 run double, Alec Bohm hit an RBI double, and the Phillies defeated the Toronto Blue Jays with a 5-1 win Friday night. Andrew Knapp also came around to score on a bases loaded walk.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr got the Blue Jays on the board in the 6th, mashing a solo homer to make it 1-0. In the 7th, Knapp scored on a bases loaded walk to tie it, Hoskins hit a 3 run double to clear the bases, and Bohm scored Hoskins with an RBI double to right field, making it 5-1 Phillies quickly, giving them the win.

Phillies manager Joe Girardi had high praise for Hoskins and Bohm after the game, saying that "These guys are good offensive players. We’ve dealt with a pandemic, and in baseball there seems to be a little bit of an epidemic with averages being down, right? These guys will make the adjustments. They’ll get going."

Vince Velasquez got the start for the Phillies and had a great outing, despite the no decision. Velasquez allowed one run on 3 hits and 3 walks, striking out 7 hitters in 5 2/3 innings pitched. Connor Brogdon got the win for the Phillies, finishing the 6th for Velasquez. Sam Coonrod, Jose Alvarado, and Hector Neris also pitched for Philadelphia.

Velasquez said of his start that "I was so locked in today that I had my earrings in. I was like, ‘What’s going on here?’ That just shows that my mindset was just there to pitch. I was ready for this game. To start off this new series. To try to get our guys back in the zone and win another series. We’re right in this thing."

Trent Thornton got the loss for Toronto, allowing two runs on one hit and two walks in 1 2/3 relief innings. Steven Matz had a good start for the Blue Jays, despite getting a no decision. Matz allowed zero runs on 4 hits and 3 walks, striking out 9 Phillies in 5 innings pitched. Tim Mayza, Jeremy Beasley, and Joel Payamps also pitched.

Matz said of his outing that "I want to hit the ground running now with this, and continue where I’m at with my stuff. I still want to get deeper into that game and be more efficient with my pitches. Those guys over there got me deep into some counts, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction."

The Phillies and Blue Jays continue their series tonight, with Anthony Kay starting for Toronto, and Aaron Nola going for the Phillies.
