Edman homers twice in Cards shutout win

What an afternoon for Tommy Edman, who sure helped the St.Louis Cardinals to a win. Edman homered twice, Edmundo Sosa hit a two run single, and the Cardinals shut out the Chicago White Sox with a 4-0 victory Wednesday afternoon.

There was some controversy however, and it was not a pretty one. Cardinals reliever Giovanny Gallegos was pitching in the 7th, when second base umpire Dan Bellino noticed that there might be a foreign substance on Gallegos's hat. Home plate umpire Joe West then asked Gallegos to change hats, which set off manager Mike Shildt, which got him ejected.

Shildt said "This is baseball's dirty little secret, and it's the wrong time and the wrong arena to expose it. Here's the deal. First of all, Gio wears the same hat all year. Hats accrue dirt. Hats accrue substances. Did Gio have some sunscreen at some point in his career to make sure he doesn't get some kind of melanoma? Possibly. Does he use rosin to help out? Possibly. Are these things that baseball really wants to crack down on? No."

Edman started the scoring with a solo homer to center field in the 3rd inning, giving St.Louis a 1-0 lead early. It stayed 1-0 until the 8th, when Edman made it 2-0 with another solo homer, this one going to left field. In the 9th, Sosa scored Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt with a single, making the lead 4-0 and sealing the game.

John Gant got the win for the Cardinals, allowing 5 hits and 3 walks, striking out 3 hitters in 5 innings pitched. Genesis Cabrera then pitched 1 1/3 shutout innings in relief of Gant, followed by Gallegos for 1 2/3 shutout innings, and Alex Reyes with a shutout 9th inning.

For the White Sox, it was Carlos Rodon who got the loss, allowing one run on just one hit, which was the Edman solo homer, and Rodon racked up 10 strikeouts in 6 sharp innings. Michael Kopech, Aaron Bummer, and Jose Ruiz also pitched in relief of Rodon.

Rodon said of his start that it was "A little warm, that warm weather helps, reach back and get a little more. It was a good outing. I would have liked to have gone a little deeper, but pitch count, tough too. Just trying to go start by start and stay healthy. One pitch I want back, obviously the changeup to Tommy, but he was swinging it good today. Can’t do much about it."

White Sox manager Tony La Russa liked his team's chances, saying that "It wasn't like our guys didn't go to bat and go to work and try to make things happen. I look at it two ways. The first is, we had to create those chances, so obviously our guys were working the at-bats. Just couldn't break through."

The Cardinals face the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight, with Carlos Martinez getting the start. Dylan Cease starts for the White Sox as they face the Baltimore Orioles.
