Gomber stars as Rockies hold off Mets

The Colorado Rockies fielded a major league baseball team on Monday night against the New York Mets. The Mets, meanwhile, fielded half of their Triple A team with over half of the major league regulars on the IL for various reasons. Ryan McMahon homered, Elias Diaz homered, and the Rockies beat the Mets 3-2 on Monday night.

Manager Bud Black said of adjusting the offense that "We got a machine out there. We spun breaking balls. We threw four-seam fastballs, hard sliders, hard curveballs to have the guys see spin early, just get the background of Citi Field. And conversation really about mentally going from Denver to New York, or Denver to anywhere."

McMahon and Diaz got the Rockies on the board in the second inning, each hitting solo home runs, putting the Rockies ahead 2-0 early on. In the 4th inning, Garrett Hampson hit an RBI triple and the lead increased to 3-0 Rockies. The Mets tried to get back in the game with a solo homer by James McCann, and another solo homer from Brandon Drury, but that was all they could manage.

Austin Gomber put together a fantastic outing for the Rockies, allowing two runs on 4 hits, racking up 8 strikeouts in 8 dominant innings pitched for Gomber, who was traded to Colorado as part of the Nolan Arenado blockbuster. Carlos Estevez shut down the Mets in the 9th after Drury's homer, getting his second save this season.

Gomber felt a shift in the Rockies momentum, saying that "We feel like we’re starting to play well, and things are starting to move in the right direction. The thing was just keep that going, get us off to a good start. Hopefully, we can keep that momentum the rest of the trip."

For the Mets, their injury problems continued in the loss, with Triple A outfielder Johneshwy Fargas having to leave the game after suffering an AC joint sprain while running after Hampson's RBI triple in the 4th inning. He joins a Mets IL that already has 17 players on it.

The long injured list forced James McCann, normally a catcher, to play first base Monday night. McCann had played first in college, and got his first start at first as a professional for this game, due to all the injuries. McCann simply said "We’ve got to find a way to stay afloat, until we start welcoming back our guys."

The Mets will get one of those guys back for tonight's game against the Rockies, as Jacob Degrom will come off the 10 Day IL and make the start for the Mets. The Rockies will counter with Kyle Freeland, making his season debut.
