Muncy homers as Dodgers top Giants

Max Muncy has been a force to be reckoned with in the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup recently. He continued his torrid pace Saturday. Muncy homered, Austin Barnes homered, and the Dodgers defeated the San Francisco Giants with a 6-3 win Saturday afternoon.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Muncy "He’s a key piece to what we’re doing. Defensively, offensively, doesn’t matter handedness of opposing pitchers, he still goes out there and gives you a good at-bat, four good at-bats a night. Drives in runs, gets on base. I don’t talk about injuries very much, but having the consistency of Max, it’s kind of kept us afloat."

Muncy started the game with a long solo homer that landed in McCovey cove, giving the Dodgers an early 1-0 lead. In the 5th inning, Barnes hit a solo homer of his own to make it 2-0 Dodgers. In the 7th, a Matt Beaty RBI double and a DJ Peters RBI single gave the Dodgers a 4-0 lead. In the 8th, Albert Pujols hit an RBI single, and Muncy scored on a sac bunt to give the Dodgers 6 runs.

Roberts continued about Muncy, saying "I think he’s just going back to just being a really good hitter. And really good hitters use the whole field. They swing at strikes, take balls. And when a pitcher makes a mistake with the power he has, he can slug you."

Walker Buehler put together an amazing outing for the Dodgers, allowing one run on 6 hits and one walk, striking out 5 hitters over 7 innings pitched. After Buehler departed, Alex Vesia allowed two runs in the 8th inning, and Kenley Jansen worked the 9th for the save, his 11th this season.

The Giants started their scoring with an RBI single to left field by Alex Dickerson in the 7th inning, which made it a 4-1 Dodgers lead at the time. In the 8th, Buster Posey launched a two run homer off Vesia to left field, which trimmed the Dodger lead to 6-3, but they couldn't get any more against Jansen in the 9th.

Despite getting the loss, Giants pitcher Scott Kazmir made his return to the majors, his first start in a big league game since 2019. This is Kazmir's second comeback, with his first coming in 2013 after not playing all of 2012. Kazmir allowed one run on two hits, recording two strikeouts over 4 innings pitched.

Kazmir said of returning to the big leagues "I wasn't 100% sure I would have this game. This whole day has been a huge whirlwind to get here and actually get out there and pitch. It was everything I thought it was going to be. The adrenaline was there. I was very nervous to start everything, but once I got settled in, I felt comfortable. I was able to throw strikes and attack hitters, so I felt good out there."

The Dodgers and Giants wrap up their series this afternoon, with Julio Urias starting for the Dodgers, and Anthony DeSclafani going for the Giants.
