The San Diego Padres have dealt with some star players hitting the Covid-19 IL over the last week. Despite that, they keep winning games. Austin Nola drove in 6 runs, Tommy Pham and Ha-Seong Kim homered, and the Padres destroyed the St.Louis Cardinals with a 13-3 win Saturday afternoon.

Nola talked about the Covid-19 adversity, saying that "You just have to deal with the circumstances and we’ve definitely taken hold of that as a team. We know we have to do our job as a team. Nothing really changed as far as the game plan, we really had to stick to what we do best and that's grind out at-bats and play good defense behind our pitchers."

Padres manager Jayce Tingler said that "In  kind of a weird way, there’s some unique things about it. It’s not ideal. The positives are, the five guys that are out, they’re feeling well. We’re having other guys step up. We’ve got pitchers coming up offering to play the outfield, to pinch-hit, anything like that. That room just continues to be tighter and tighter every day. That’s special when you’re trying to build chemistry and things like that."

Pham hit a two run homer in the first to make it a 2-0 Padres lead. In the second, Kim hit a solo homer, and Nola hit a 3 run homer in the 3rd to make it a 6-0 lead. In the 6th, Manny Machado and Patrick Kivlehan hit RBI singles, Nola hit an RBI double, and Kivlehan scored on a ground out, making it 10 runs for San Diego. In the 7th, John Andreoli scored on a sac fly, and Nola hit a two run single, making it 13 runs.

For the Cardinals, Yadier Molina got them on the board in the 4th inning with a solo homer, making it a 6-1 Padres lead. In the 6th, Nolan Arenado made it a 6-2 game with a solo homer, this one going to center field. In the 7th, Harrison Bader hit another solo homer for the Cardinals, this one to left field, making it a 10-3 game at that point.

Miguel Diaz got the victory for the Padres, pitching two relief innings, allowing one run on two hits and one walk, while striking out 3. Chris Paddack got the no decision for the Padres, allowing one run on 3 hits and one walk over 4 innings pitched. Pierce Johnson threw one inning of relief, and Nabil Crismatt threw two innings.

Adam Wainwright got knocked around the park in a loss for the Cardinals, getting shelled for 6 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks in 4 innings pitched, getting just two strikeouts. The Cardinals didn't get any better efforts from their bullpen, so infielder Matt Carpenter came in to pitch the last 1 1/3 innings of the game, allowing two hits.

Wainwright said of being routed in his start that "Command with everything, fastball command was horrible, my cutter was up in the zone, changeup was up in the zone and my curveball was hangers, just absolute hangers. Just really nothing you can say other than it was just a terrible performance. If kids were out there watching me today, hopefully, they took a nap or went and played Uno or something when I was pitching and hitting. That was an atrocious effort."

The Cardinals and Padres end their series tonight, with Kwang-Hyun Kim getting the start for St.Louis, and rookie Ryan Weathers starting for San Diego.
