Padres break through against Pirates

The San Diego Padres have gotten some really good pitching, from quite a lot of faces. It buys time for their lineup to break through and score some runs. That finally happened in the 7th inning. Austin Nola hit an RBI double, 6 different Padres pitched, and the Padres shut out the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 2-0 win Monday night.

The scoring started in the 7th inning for the Padres. First, Manny Machado scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Tommy Pham, coming home to make it a 1-0 Padres lead later on in the game. Later in the 7th inning, Nola struck for an RBI double, scoring Wil Myers and making it a 2-0 Padres lead, which held.

Nola spoke about the pitching staff after the game, saying that "The game goes in ups and downs and waves, especially hitting. But like I said, our pitching and defense has been solid. That’s all you can ask for is to continue to get better, pitching and defense, and know that the hitting, as it goes in waves, will always come."

Tim Hill got the win for the Padres, throwing a scoreless inning of relief, striking out one hitter. Miguel Diaz got the start for the Padres, and threw 3 innings, allowing no runs on one hit and two walks, recording 3 strikeouts. Mark Melancon was able to shut down the Pirates in the 9th for his 10th save of the season. Craig Stammen, Austin Adams, and Drew Pomeranz also pitched for the Padres.

Padres manager Jayce Tingler said of the win that "When we’re pitching it right and playing the defense we’re capable of, we’re an incredibly tough team to score on. That’s going to allow us to stay in more games. It’s going to give us chances, like the seventh inning, to keep battling. We know we don’t want to be a one-dimensional team that can only win one way. Right now, we’re winning this style. Do I expect us to start slugging the ball? I do. I think it’s going to come."

Tyler Anderson started for the Pirates, getting hit with the loss despite putting up good numbers, allowing two runs on two hits and 3 walks, striking out 5 hitters in 6 2/3 innings pitched. Clay Holmes finished the 7th for Anderson, and David Bednar came in and threw a scoreless 8th inning, striking out one hitter.

Pirates manager Derek Shelton said of the loss that "When we win games, we have the ability to move and hit and run and do things. When you don’t have a lot of baserunners, it’s harder to do that, because we’re not going to sit and bang with anybody. So we have to make sure that we’re trying to create more run-scoring opportunities, and tonight, we just didn’t."

The Padres and Pirates continue their series tonight, with Mitch Keller starting for Pittsburgh, and Ryan Weathers going for San Diego.
