It was a battle of Milwaukee’s Brandon Woodruff and Washington’s Max Scherzer. Fortunately for the Milwaukee Brewers, it was Woodruff who came out on top. Avisal Garcia homered, Omar Narvaez homered, and the Brewers shut out the Nationals 3-0 Sunday afternoon.

Woodruff put up a gem of a performance for Milwaukee, striking out 10 hitters and allowing two hits and two walks over 7 innings pitched. Brad Boxberger pitched the 8th, and Josh Hader got his 12th save of the season in the 9th.

Woodruff said of pitching against Scherzer that "Any time you get to go against Max, it’s going to be a challenge. He’s one of the best in the game and one of the best to ever do it.”

Garcia hit a two run homer off Scherzer in the first, giving Milwaukee a 2-0 lead early on in the game. It remained that way until the 9th inning, when Narvaez hit a solo homer to make it a 3-0 game.

Scherzer got the loss for the Nationals despite a solid outing, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk, racking up 10 strikeouts in 6 innings pitched. Kyle Finnegan, Wander Suero, and Austin Voth also pitched.

Scherzer said of his outing that "I was able to execute pitches all day long except for that pitch to Garcia. That’s a pitch I want back, but that’s not how life works.”

The Nationals play the Braves on Monday, with Joe Ross starting. Milwaukee plays the Tigers, with Corbin Burnes starting.
