When Ketel Marte settled under the ball and caught it in the 9th inning, a large weight was lifted off the Arizona Diamondbacks shoulders. They're still in last place in the NL West by a country mile, but their losing streak is over. Josh Rojas hit an RBI double, Pavin Smith and Marte hit RBI singles, and the Diamondbacks defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 on Monday night.

Despite snapping a historic 17 game losing streak, the Diamondbacks still have a road losing streak of over 20 games, and they are over 20 games back of the NL West leading San Francisco Giants. But, they finally won a game, and snapped that 17 game losing streak.

D-Backs manager Torey Lovullo said "I tried to tell you before the game, you have no idea what's happening inside of our clubhouse on a daily basis and the pain that we were feeling after a game. There's excitement in that clubhouse tonight that's well deserved. And it's a night where I'm sure a lot of people inside of this organization will have a very, very good night's rest, and we all deserve that."

The D-Backs got the scoring started in the second inning, when Smith, Marte, and Stephen Vogt each hit RBI singles, giving the D-Backs a 3-1 lead at the time. In the 4th, Rojas cranked an RBI double to left field, and Marte scored on a groundout by Asdrubal Cabrera to make it a 5-1 lead for the D-Backs, which held.

Merrill Kelly turned in a fantastic start for the D-Backs, allowing just one run on 5 hits and one walk, striking out 5 hitters in 7 brilliant innings pitched, as the D-Backs snapped their long skid. Recent callup Noe Ramirez then pitched a scoreless 8th inning, and Joakim Soria shut the door with a shutout 9th inning as well.

Kelly said he realized they were going to win when "Especially once we got the five runs and it was 5-1, I think everybody kind of sensed it in the dugout, like, you know, this is our time. If we didn't get this one, I don't know what would have happened. But like I said, I'm glad we did."

Milwaukee's lone run came on a first inning RBI single to center field by Avisail Garcia, which made it a 1-0 lead for the Brewers, before the D-Backs scored 5 unanswered runs to take the win from Milwaukee, who couldn't beat Kelly and the D-Backs bullpen after that.

Brett Anderson was hit with the loss for the Brewers, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits in 1 1/3 innings pitched, before leaving early due to injury. Hoby Milner gave up the other two runs scored by the D-Backs in his two innings of pitching. Trevor Richards, Jake Cousins, and Hunter Strickland also pitched for Milwaukee.

Milwaukee and Arizona continue their series tonight, with Freddy Peralta getting the start for the Brewers, and Zac Gallen starting for Arizona.
