The Philadelphia Phillies had everything working. They had a lead entering the 7th inning, they looked like they could close it out. Boy, we they wrong. Nick Castellanos drove in 7 runs, the Phillies bullpen collapsed in the 8th inning, and the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Phillies 12-4 on Monday night.

Phillies manager Joe Girardi said "Well, obviously, I could have gone to Hector, I guess. I was not using Archie tonight. He needed a day off. I could have gone to Brogdon. We liked Neftalí against that group of guys, and it just didn’t work out. You know, walk, hit batsman and it led to the big inning."

The Phillies bullpen is on pace to shatter records for blown saves. The Phillies blew 25 saves as a bullpen in 2004, while the Colorado Rockies blew 34 saves that same season. This bullpen is on pace to shatter both records. Even though they did not blow a save Monday night, they became the first team to blow 7 saves in a 6 day span on Sunday, blowing consecutive save opportunities in two doubleheaders.

In terms of the Phillies offense, Alec Bohm got the scoring started in the 4th inning, with an RBI double. Bohm then scored on a fielders choice to make it 2-2. In the 5th, they got two more runs to take a 4-2 lead, thanks to RBI singles from Bohm and Ronald Torreyes.

For the Reds, Castellanos hit a two run single in the 3rd, making it 2-0 Reds at the time. They did not score again until the 7th, when Castellanos cranked a grand slam to put the Reds in front 6-4. In the 8th, Tyler Stephenson and Eugenio Suarez scored on a bunt+error, Jonathan India hit an RBI single, Castellanos hit an RBI double, and came around to score on a wild pitch.

Reds manager David Bell said of Castellanos that "He’s one of the best players in the league. He’s showing that. I know he’s driven to be the best, and that’s what it takes. He’s also driven like the rest of our team to see what we can be as a team. That really helps. That’s the right kind of motivation, and that makes Nick and the rest of our players better."

Castellanos said of hitting his grand slam that "Right after the foul ball, I was like, Golly that was close. Then I kind of had to re-lock it in. The majority of the pitches that he threw that inning were heaters. So he kind of showed me his slider early and I took a good swing on it. I don’t want to say I guessed, but I was ready for a fastball."

The Reds start a series with the San Diego Padres on Tuesday, with Tony Santillan getting the start. The Phillies open a series with the Miami Marlins, with Vince Velasquez getting the start.
