The Boston Red Sox were looking to make a statement. They didn't just want to win the series against the New York Yankees, they wanted to sweep them. Marwin Gonzalez hit the game tying homer, Xander Bogaerts drove in the winning run, and the Red Sox beat the Yankees 6-5 in 10 innings to sweep them at Yankee stadium.

Bogaerts said of the sweep that "It was real nice. We know we haven’t had a lot of success against the Yankees these last couple of years, but this team is different. We have a lot of winning players. You could see that with Kiké last night with that big RBI. Marwin, these last couple of days, he’s been getting hot."

Verdugo started the scoring for the Red Sox with a first inning solo homer to right field. That was the only run they scored until the 7th, when Gonzalez delivered a game tying two run homer, knotting things at 3-3. In the 8th, a sac fly by Bogaerts made it a 4-3 Red Sox lead. In the 10th, a two run single by Bogaerts made it 6-4, a lead they held on to.

Matt Barnes got the win for the Red Sox, despite allowing one run in the 9th and blowing the save. Garrett Richards threw 5 innings in his start, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits and two walks, while striking out 6 hitters. Phillips Valdez got his first big league save in the bottom of the 10th, allowing one run. Darwinzon Hernandez, Adam Ottavino, and Josh Taylor also pitched.

Gonzalez said of the sweep that "It was special, especially because we got the series. The ballpark was not full capacity yet, so I couldn’t say what it’s like. A full-capacity ballpark is obviously going to be better, you know, more energy. Let’s see next month."

For the Yankees, they took a 2-1 lead in the first inning on a two run double by Gary Sanchez. In the 4th, Miguel Andujar scored on a fielders choice by Aaron Judge to make it 3-1 Yankees. In the 9th, an RBI double by Gleyber Torres tied the game 4-4. In the 10th, Roughned Odor scored on a fielding error to cut the deficit to 6-5, but Valdez shut the door after that

Judge said "They were the better team tonight, but a lot of good things happened tonight. A lot of good at-bats, a lot of clutch at-bats late in the game, guys picking each other up. There’s a lot of positives out of this game, even though we didn’t get the win. It’s tough getting swept at home, especially against your rival, but a lot of guys showed a lot of heart."

The Red Sox play the Marlins this afternoon, with Nick Pivetta getting the start. The Yankees will start a series with the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday, with Jordan Montgomery getting the start.
