It was a pitchers duel out in the bay, between the St.Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants. Entering the 7th inning, the game was tied 0-0. Then, the Cardinals offense woke up. Matt Carpenter hit a two run triple, Nolan Arenado and Harrison Bader each hit RBI singles, and the Cardinals defeated the Giants 5-3 on Monday.

Carpenter said of the win that "Gausman took a no-hitter into the top of the seventh, I believe it was. Was really just painting and not making any mistakes, and we found a way to scratch out a couple of runs against him. If we can do it consistently, we’re going to catch some people."

Carpenter gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead in the 7th inning, with a two run triple to left center field. In the 8th, Arenado drove in Dylan Carlson with an RBI single to make it 3-0 Cardinals. In the 9th inning, Harrison Bader brought Tommy Edman home with an RBI single to center field. Later, Paul Dejong scored on a Jose Rondon sac fly to center field.

Kwang-Hyun Kim got the win for the Cardinals in a fantastic start. Kim allowed no runs on 3 hits and two walks, striking out two hitters in 7 fantastic innings pitched, increasing to 3-5 on the season. Giovanny Gallegos allowed one run in the 8th in his outing, and, despite allowing two runs in the 9th, Alex Reyes closed it out.

Carpenter said "Today was just what we kind of have always expected the kind of club we have. It was good starting pitching by KK, he really threw the ball well, and tough, competitive at-bats by a really good starting pitcher. The guy took a no-hitter into the top of the seventh and really just painting and not making any mistakes and we found a way to scratch against him."

Alex Dickerson got the Giants offense started in the 8th inning, hitting a solo homer to right field, cutting the Cardinals lead to 3-1 at the time. After the Cardinals increased the lead to 5-1 in the 9th, Wilmer Flores scored on an RBI single from Donovan Solano, and Darin Ruf scored on a Steven Duggar ground out. That was all the Giants could get.

Despite another great start, Kevin Gausman took the loss for the Giants, allowing two runs on 3 hits and two walks, racking up 8 strikeouts in 7 innings pitched for San Francisco. Zack Littell allowed one run in his relief appearance, and Jimmie Sherfy was responsible for the two runs that scored in the 9th inning.

Giants manager Gabe Kapler said "I’m proud of the way we fought in the ninth and that we were able to string some good at-bats together. As a general effort, I don’t think it was our best overall. I thought Gausman was excellent."

The Cardinals and Giants continue their series tonight, with Johnny Cueto starting for San Francisco, and Adam Wainwright getting the ball for the Cardinals.
