A fearsome power hitter is on his way to the AL East. The Boston Red Sox have acquired OF Kyle Schwarber from the Washington Nationals in exchange for RHP prospect Aldo Ramirez, according to Robert Murray of FanSided. The Red Sox have confirmed the trade.

The Red Sox will take on the rest of the $7 million owed to Schwarber for this season. In Schwarber's deal, there is also a mutual option for the 2022 season, which is worth $11 million, with a $3 million buyout, guaranteeing Schwarber $10 million. Brandon Workman was DFA'd by the Red Sox to make room for Schwarber on the 40 man roster.

As of right now, Schwarber is still on the 10 day IL with a right hamstring strain, that he suffered at the beginning of July. There is no set date for a Schwarber return, although he has been doing some light jogging and taking batting practice lately. The Red Sox have placed Schwarber on the 10 Day IL as a result, which keeps a spot open on the active roster.

Despite being unable to participate, Schwarber was named to his first all star game this season. Before getting injured, Schwarber had a .253 average with a .910 OPS, hitting 25 homers and driving in 53 runs in 72 games for the Nationals. In his 7 seasons, with the Chicago Cubs and Nationals, Schwarber has a .233 average with an .828 OPS, mashing 146 homers and 332 RBI in 623 games.

Despite him currently being on the IL, the Red Sox will have to find a place for Schwarber to play when he is activated. Does he play left field, forcing Alex Verdugo to center, and top prospect Jarren Duran to Triple A Worcester? Does he play DH, forcing regular DH JD Martinez into the outfield on a more regular basis? Or do they try and teach him first base, where there is a clear hole in terms of production?

Going back to the Nationals is Ramirez, a pitcher who is ranked 19th in the Red Sox farm system, according to MLB pipeline. In Low A Salem, Ramirez has a 1-1 record, with a 2.03 ERA in 8 starts, striking out 32 hitters in 31 innings pitched this season. Ramirez projects as a back of the rotation starter in the big leagues, which is something the Nationals need.
