The Chicago White Sox might have defeated the Oakland Athletics 9-0 on Tuesday night, but, right now, the story is all about A's RHP Chris Bassitt. In the second inning of last night's game, Bassitt was struck in the head after White Sox OF Brian Goodwin hit a line drive at Bassitt. He immediately fell to the ground and a few minutes later, was carted off the field and taken to the hospital.

The Athletics say that Bassitt was conscious and alert the whole time, but there was bleeding evident. He has been released from the hospital, but he will require facial surgery after suffering a displaced tripod fracture in his right cheek, according to the A's. There is no other damage to his eyes and face, and other tests done on Bassitt have come back clear.

Meister Sports, the agency that represents Bassitt, said in a statement that "Chris will be better than ever and back to doing what he loves soon and thanks everyone for their prayers and support. Things like this remind us that in most ways we are of one heart and mind."

Bassitt was enjoying a season to remember for the A's, making his first all star game. So far this season, he has a 12-4 record with a 3.22 ERA, striking out 154 batters in 151 innings pitched for the A's, starting 25 games this season. It is unknown currently how much time Bassitt will have to miss. He was 12-3 entering the game, and was charged with the loss last night.

After the game, the postgame press conferences for both teams all revolved around Bassitt, with many players, including Bassitt's teammate last season Jake Lamb, who is now on the White Sox, taking the time to wish him well. This also includes White Sox manager Tony La Russa, who also sent out a get well soon tweet.

As for the A's and White Sox, they continue play tonight in Chicago, with Cole Irvin starting for Oakland, and Lance Lynn getting the nod for the White Sox.
