It may have been Matt Olson that got the winning hit, but he wouldn't have had the chance if it weren't for the new additions to the Oakland Athletics. Yan Gomes drove in the tying run, Olson delivered the walk off hit, and the Athletics defeated the San Diego Padres 5-4 in 10 innings on Wednesday afternoon.

Asked about the new guys, Olson said "They've been great. The way that they’re swinging the bat and how they carry themselves on the field is super important. It’s nice to have veteran guys come in who have been doing it for a while, and in different ways. It brings a different mindset and perspective. Being able to talk with them and work, it’s been awesome having them."

Jed Lowrie kicked off the scoring for Oakland in the second, with a solo homer to right field, making it 1-0 A's to start. After the Padres scored 3 runs to take a 3-1 lead entering the 9th, the A's bats came back to life. First, it was Matt Chapman with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-2. Then, it was Gomes who delivered the game tying single. In extras, Olson delivered the walk off two run double.

Adam Frazier picked up the Padres offense in the 3rd, with an RBI single to tie things 1-1. In the 4th, an RBI double from Trent Grisham and an RBI single from Victor Caratini gave the Padres a 3-1 lead after 4 innings. They did not score again until the 10th inning, when Ha-Seong Kim scored on a fielders choice, making it a 4-3 lead, before Oakland came back and won.

Lou Trivino picked up the win for the A's, despite allowing one run in the 10th, improving to 4-4 on the season. Frankie Montas had a solid outing in his start, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits, racking up 8 strikeouts in 6 innings pitched, getting a no decision. Jake Diekman, Yusmeiro Petit, and new acquistion Andrew Chafin also saw relief action.

A's manager Bob Melvin said of the win that "Last night was not a particularly good game for us. Anytime you have a walk-off win at home, especially when you’re behind and things aren’t looking good as the game goes along, and you tie the game against a closer that’s been really good, it ranks right up there. We needed this win."

For the Padres, Mark Melancon blew his 5th save of the season in the 9th inning, and Tim Hill gave up the walk off hit in the 10th, taking the loss and dropping to a 5-6 record, also blowing a save in the process, his 4th of the season. It wasted a great start from Joe Musgrove, allowing one run on two hits and 3 walks, with 5 punchouts in 6 innings pitched. Pierce Johnson and Drew Pomeranz also pitched.

Musgrove said of his 6 inning start despite dominating that "Anytime you’re coming up around that 100-pitch mark, you know your day’s gonna be coming to an end soon. A lot of scenarios run through your head and you try to eliminate any of the extra internal conversations that you have."

Both teams have a day off before getting back in action on Friday. The A's play host to the Texas Rangers, with Chris Bassitt getting the series opening start. The Padres welcome the Arizona Diamondbacks to town, with rookie Ryan Weathers getting the start.
