Pillar's homer gets Mets into win column

Hours after owner Steve Cohen tweeted out that he couldn't believe that the New York Mets offense was being so unproductive, it was the Mets offense that snapped a 5 game losing streak. Michael Conforto hit an RBI double, Kevin Pillar homered, and the Mets defeated the San Francisco Giants 6-2 in 12 innings on Wednesday afternoon.

Mets manager Luis Rojas said of the offense that "We’re working to get things right. We started swinging the bats better in the ninth inning. That’s when we showed up offensively, and then we kept it going in extra innings. We understand the message. We have to get our offense right. That was a good sign today."

LaMonte Wade got the scoring started in the 3rd, hitting an RBI double to left field, scoring Alex Dickerson and giving the Giants a 1-0 lead 3 innings in. It stayed 1-0 all the way until the 9th, when Pete Alonso scored on a sac fly from JD Davis, tying the game at 1-1 and keeping the Mets alive. In the 11th, Conforto doubled to right field, which plated Jeff McNeil and gave the Mets a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the 11th, Tommy La Stella kept the Giants alive with an RBI single that scored Wade and tied the game 2-2. In the 12, Pillar put the Mets ahead 5-2 with a go ahead 3 run home run to left field, followed by an RBI double from Chance Sisco, making it 6-2 Mets, which held.

Tylor Megill started for the Mets, allowing one run on 5 hits and two walks, with 6 punchouts in 6 innings. Jeurys Familia got the win while also blowing his 5th save, giving up the RBI single to La Stella in the 11th. Other then Megill and Familia, the Mets pitching was perfect, with Miguel Castro, Edwin Diaz, Trevor May, and Jake Reed shutting out the Giants potent offense.

Rojas applauded the effort from his pitchers after the game, saying in his press conference that "I want to attribute the win to our pitchers. They gave us a chance and kept us in the game, from Tylor Megill to Jake Reed, who made the last out. They gave us a chance today."

Tyler Chatwood got the loss for the Giants, falling to 1-3 on the season. Anthony DeSclafani got the start, but had to leave after 1 1/3 innings due to injury. Thus, it became a bullpen day for San Francisco, with Jose Alvarez, Zack Littell, Dominic Leone, Jarlin Garcia, Tyler Rogers, Jake McGee, and Tony Watson all pitching in relief, with Chatwood having to eat innings at the end of the game.

Giants manager Gabe Kapler said that "Chatwood, in that situation, did everything that we could ask him to do. Obviously, he’d like to have that sinker back that he threw to Pillar that ran middle-in, or into a spot where Pillar could get it in the air. But for the most part, what we’re looking for from Chatwood is to depend on his stuff. And his stuff was pretty good. The ball was coming out good. We saw some swings and misses. But ideally, we’d like to find a softer landing spot for any of our new pitchers."

The Mets continue their west coast road trip against the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight, with Taijuan Walker getting the series opening start. After a day off, the Giants travel to Oakland to face the Athletics on Friday, with Alex Wood starting the first game of the series.
