Swanson powers Braves over Brewers

It was not a win for the Atlanta Braves. Ok, maybe it was. But, it was more so a victory for Dansby Swanson. Swanson hit two homers and drove in 7 runs, Jorge Soler drove in a run in his Braves debut, and the Braves defeated the Milwaukee Brewers easily, 8-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Braves starting pitcher Kyle Muller simply said "Shout-out to Dansby Swanson. That was absolutely incredible what he did tonight."

The two homers hit by Swanson gave him numbers 19 and 20 on the season. His 20 homers on the season tie for first in homers in a single season for a Braves shortstop. Denis Menke's 20 homers in 1964 tie Swanson. In fact, new acquisition Soler was the only Brave not named Swanson who drove in a run in this game.

It was Swanson who got the scoring started in the 4th inning, hitting an RBI single to left field, tying the game 1-1 at the time. In the 6th, Swanson broke the tie with his 19th homer of the season, a two run shot to center field. In the 7th, Ozzie Albies came around to score on an RBI single by Soler, and, after the Braves loaded the bases, Swanson cleared them all off with a grand slam to left field, making it an 8-1 game.

Swanson said "We've definitely shown in spurts that we can compete with anybody. I don't think we've been overmatched before and I feel like we've gotten even better now. It will be a fun next couple of months and hopefully we just keep rolling."

For the Brewers, it was another tough night for the offense, which is what is preventing them from truly running away with the division. Their only run came in the second inning, when Avisail Garcia scored on a fielders choice from Manny Pina, giving the Brewers a 1-0 lead at the time, before Atlanta scored 8 unanswered.

Jesse Chavez got the win for Atlanta, improving to 2-2 on the season. Chavez threw a shutout inning of relief in the 6th to get the win. Muller produced another solid start, getting the no decision. Muller allowed one run on 4 hits and two walks, with 7 strikeouts in 5 innings pitched. Tyler Matzek and Will Smith pitched as well, and new acquisition Richard Rodriguez pitched a scoreless 8th inning.

Brandon Woodruff got slapped with the loss for Milwaukee, falling to 7-6 so far. Woodruff allowed 3 runs on 8 hits and one walk, punching out 6 hitters over 5 1/3 innings. New acquisitions Daniel Norris and John Curtiss also pitched, as did Miguel Sanchez.

Woodruff said that "Sometimes you have calls go your way, sometimes you don’t. That’s part of it. Tonight was a tough one. That one was tough. It stinks because we’re playing good baseball and something like that kind of bugs me a bit. I’ll get over it."

The Brewers and Braves wrap up their series Sunday afternoon, with Brett Anderson scheduled to start for Milwaukee, and Charlie Morton getting the ball for the Braves.
