Wisdom leads Cubs past crosstown rival Sox

Maybe the Chicago Cubs just needed some Wisdom. No, not the wisdom that is advice given to people, but Patrick Wisdom. He's put on a show since he's been called up, and months later, it's still going. Wisdom hit two home runs, Rafael Ortega hit a grand slam, and the Cubs defeated the crosstown rival Chicago White Sox 7-0 on Saturday.

Wisdom said of his approach at the plate when he's hot that "I think it’s just kind of slowing things down, you know, taking it pitch by pitch. I get frustrated with a certain at-bat and I got to flush it and move on."

With his two homers, it's the 4th career multi homer game for Wisdom, who is a 30 year old rookie this season. On Friday night, his 30th birthday, was one of those multi homer nights. He's the only Cubs rookie to have consecutive multi homer games. He averages about one home run every 10 at bats, second in Cubs history, trailing only Sammy Sosa.

In the second inning, Matt Duffy came around to score on a sac bunt from Robinson Chirinos, and the Cubs took a 1-0 lead. In the 4th inning, Wisdom got it started with a solo home run to left field, making it a 2-0 game. Later that inning, Ortega walloped a grand slam to right field, clearing the bases and making it a 6-0 lead for the Cubs. Wisdom made it 7-0 in the 5th with his second homer of the night.

White Sox starter and former teammate of Widsom's, Lance Lynn said that "When we make a mistake, he hits it. You find guys that get in zones like that, and that happens. Right now he's in a good spot, he gets a chance to play. I've known Patrick for a long time. He kind of got passed over for years, finally getting his opportunity. He's making the best of it, obviously."

Alec Mills put on a show in his start for the Cubs, getting the win and moving to 6-6 this season. Mills threw 8 1/3 shutout innings, allowing 4 hits and two walks, while striking out 3 hitters in the win. Former White Sox Codi Heuer came on to get the final two outs of the game to make sure the Cubs went home happy.

On the other side, Lynn got hit hard in the loss, in which he dropped to 10-4 this season. Lynn allowed all 7 runs, giving up 7 hits and walking two, striking out 7 hitters while throwing 5 innings for the White Sox. Mike Wright and Jose Ruiz each added two shutout innings of relief after Lynn departed.

Lynn said of his start that "Well, it's not good to suck. So you learn to don't let it happen again, because then it makes for a miserable couple of weeks. So get myself ready to go for the next one and make sure I don't suck again. That's the plan."

The White Sox and Cubs wrap up the season series Sunday afternoon, with Dylan Cease looking to get the southside White Sox back on track, and Kyle Hendricks looking to keep the good times rolling for the northside Cubs.
