Against the suddenly contending New York Yankees, the Baltimore Orioles were flirting with a no hitter. They didn't end up getting it, but they'll still take the end result. Cedric Mullins hit an RBI double, Pedro Severino drove in the winning run, and the Orioles rallied to defeat the Yankees 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.

Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde said "I thought we did a nice job setting the table there by doing that. Lot of deep counts, Chappy’s command was a little bit off today. I thought we did a nice job off him, not chasing the slider, the splitter, chasing some pitches down out of the zone, besides the one that Mountcastle swung at that ended up working out for us."

The win against the Yankees was win number 42 for the Orioles, in what has been another forgettable season. But, now 6 of those 42 wins have come against the Yankees. That's the most wins Baltimore has against any one team this season.

Trey Mancini came in to score in the 4th inning, when Jorge Mateo drew a walk, giving Baltimore an early 1-0 lead. In the 7th, an RBI double from Mullins and an RBI single from Austin Hays stooped the Orioles to a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the 7th, an infield single from Gleyber Torres got the Yankees on the board, and it was 3-1.

Then came the 8th inning. In that inning, Joey Gallo shot a two run home run into the right field bleachers, tying the game at 3-3 late. In the top of the 9th, the Orioles loaded the bases against the Yankees, and Ryan Mountcastle scored on a sac fly from Severino to give Baltimore the 4-3 lead.

Cole Sulser got the win for the Orioles, throwing 1 1/3 innings to end the game, improving to 4-3 this season. Chris Ellis got the start and starred, throwing 5 no hit innings, walking 3 hitters and striking out two. Tanner Scott continued the no hitter with a clean 6th, but it was broken up in the 7th when Marcos Diplan was on the mound. Jorge Lopez pitched 2/3 of an inning in the 8th.

Hyde said of the pitching that "I thought we pitched extremely well. Chris Ellis, obviously, that was a really good performance. Enough fastball command with a really good curveball kept guys off-balance. What can you say about five hitless innings? I thought he was masterful."

Aroldis Chapman got the loss to fall to 5-4 this season, responsible for loading the bases and giving up the winning run in the 9th inning. Jordan Montgomery failed to go 5 innings in his start, allowing one run on 6 hits and two walks, striking out 5 hitters in 4 2/3 innings. Clay Holmes, Wandy Peralta, and Lucas Luetge also pitched.

Gallo said of the tough loss that "Even though the Orioles are not considered a great team, they’re a big league team. They have good arms; they can swing it. It just happens. Over the course of 162 games, you’re going to play really, really good for two weeks, and sometimes it’s not going to go your way for a few games."

The Orioles and Yankees wrap up their series Sunday afternoon, with Keegan Akin getting the start for the Orioles in the series finale, while Corey Kluber will start for the Yankees.
