Brewers nab Severino on one year deal

With Manny Pina off to Atlanta and Luke Maile a free agent, the Milwaukee Brewers needed a backup catcher. They now have that issue resolved. The Brewers and C Pedro Severino have agreed to a one year, $1.9 million deal, with an additional $400,000 in bonuses, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. The Brewers have confirmed the deal.

Severino had spent the last 3 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, but, with top catching prospect and top prospect in all of baseball Adley Rutschman rising through the system quickly, the Orioles decided to outright Severino off the 40 man roster to Triple A Norfolk, with Severino choosing to become a free agent over accepting the outright assignment.

Last season, his 3rd in Baltimore, Severino hit for a .248 batting average with a .690 OPS, hitting 11 home runs and driving in 46 runs in 113 games for the Orioles. His strength of hitting left handed makes him a solid number two of a catching platoon, which is likely to be his situation in Milwaukee with Omar Narvaez, as Narvaez has struggled against lefties in his career.

In 7 seasons in the major leagues, split with the Orioles and Washington Nationals, Severino has a career .235 average with a .677 OPS, hitting 33 home runs and posting 133 RBI's, with 5 stolen bases to his name in 362 games played in his 7 seasons, with 113 last year being the highest in his career so far.

Signing with Milwaukee, Severino brings good defensive value, having thrown out 23 percent of potential base stealers in 109 games he spent behind the plate last season. He's always been a good defensive catcher, and the Brewers will try to help him gain a more consistent bat, which they have previously done with Narvaez, his catching partner for the 2022 season.
